Day three – sleeping in, walks and a short run

The late night eating yesterday, along with a very busy brain, meant that I hardly got any sleep last night. Crashing back to bed at about 7am, I slept right through parkrun and through to 11, which hasn’t happened in a while. This has thrown my plans for the day out by a bit.

I’m disappointed at missing the parkrun. I’d hoped to get along to all of them through January, but there was no way that I could run this morning. Instead I’ve spent the afternoon working through the different training goals for the year and then sorting out food for the week. Shopping took me to the shiny new Netto down the road and then off to Asda in Skem where I wanted to get some fancy lunchboxes for the children.

This is one of the new lunchboxes. There's a compartment for just about anything - and what looks like a hip-flask for orange juice. Let's see how long it lasts.

The children are starting with packed lunches on Monday. They wanted to stop getting cooked lunches at school after complaining that they weren’t as tasty as cheese and ham sandwiches. They could be disappointed if I start filling their exciting new lunchboxes with nuts, seeds and healthy shit. In the short term, they’ll get exactly what they want – I’ve got a boatload of cheese and sandwich ham for them. They’ll think they’ve died and gone to heaven (except it won’t have waffles, which is apparently the food of kings these days)

So, at 8pm in Skelmersdale I thought that I’d go for a walk.

For the past few days I’ve walked with Lorna in Aylesbury. She’s been taking a 30 minute walk every day for the past 115+ days and it seems like a good habit to be in. I’ve got a plan to try and get some walks in, but I’m not sure about doing it every day. Having said that, I found myself packing the car in the dark thinking that I’d been out for a 30 minute walk for each of the past five days and that I should try to keep up the streak. Off I went towards Birch Green, then swinging back past Bennatynes, towards the Ecumenical Centre, across to the Concourse, past the Co-Op, back around towards the college and then taking a rather zig-zagged route back to the Asda car park to reach the car at about 31 minutes. That’ll be six days in a row. Small yay! Of course, it’s nothing when compared to hundreds put in by others.

Anyway, I felt that I should still get a bit of a run in. It was nearly 9pm by the time I’d got back and sorted things out. Jude was back from visiting her Dad and Gill, so I took in a quick 1 mile run on the treadmill. Really just a starter at trying to get used to running on the machine, which I’ve hated since starting two years ago, but now I think I should just man-up and get on with it. That, along with improving my 5k time, is the plan for January.

So a short run and a 30 minute walk today. I think that counts for a Janathon day. Plus now I’m in the middle of cooking meals for next week, at a quarter to midnight. That’s what I get for having a lie-in…
